About Our Christmas Past Event at Island Farm

On the first Friday and Saturday in December, costumed interpreters at Island Farm will share how Roanoke Island families celebrated the Christmas holiday in the mid-1800s. The homeplace will be decorated and lit by candlelight, while Farm interpreters demonstrate traditional mid-19th century traditions of food, celebration, and holiday craft.

This event is made possible with support from the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau.

Event Highlights Include:

  • Costumed Interpreters: Discover how Christmas was celebrated in the mid-19th century.
  • Traditional Crafts: Participate in candle making, ornament crafting, and grapevine wreath making.
  • Special Activities: Visit with St. Nicholas, sip fresh cider, munch on sugar cookies, warm up by the bonfire, and witness musket firing.
  • Free Tintype Portraits: Get your portrait taken by North Carolina-based tintype photographer Chris Morgan, using the historic wet-plate collodion method.
