Visit the Farm

On any given day at Island Farm, our staff is telling the real story of the hardscrabble life of Roanoke Islanders who first settled here – after the Lost Colony, and before the Civil War and the Wright Brothers’ first flight.

You’ll find unique programs and live demonstrations including blacksmithing, traditional agriculture, food preservation, hearth cooking, weaving, woodworking, various livestock interactions, and so much more! This is hands-on history – don’t miss it!

We went for the Island Farm Christmas night. It was very well organized with a lot of interesting information about the particular farm, but also Christmas traditions during the time period. We looked in the detached kitchen with a full table spread of foods they would have served and were treated with cider, a cookie, and some fresh cooked meat. Some friends made some dipped candles. We made wreaths to take home. There was also a tour of the main house.A lot of fun for those who like history!

Way underestimated this place! A LIVING history museum. The docents were so knowledgeable and helpful and what they're doing there is so very important for everyone to see!

Fun place to explore. Interpretors give rich history and answer any questions you might have. Spent about an hour there and got to taste some herb tea from the garden. It's as accurate as one can get and like going back to 1847 for just a little while ...

Unforgettable experience. This place is very special. The staff is all magnificent. Theyre absolutely lovely human beings with a passion for curation and history. The grounds are breathtakingly beautiful, don't get me started on the tree.... That tree has seen some STUFF! We ended up here by pure chance and I am so happy we did. Can't recommend it enough.
