Livestock Manager – Island Farm, Roanoke Island, NC
Overview
Island Farm is a living history site on Roanoke Island (on the Outer Banks of North Carolina) that interprets mid-19th century daily life. The site is centered around a circa 1847 homeplace and associated reconstructed outbuildings.
The homeplace at Island Farm is one the three oldest homes on the island remaining today, and the only Antebellum home that is restored to its original condition and open to the public. Daily programming at Island Farm changes seasonally and includes blacksmithing, hearth cooking, traditional gardening, fiber art demonstrations, wagon rides, and more. Livestock on-site (a cow, chickens, sheep, and Banker ponies) serve as an integral piece of the Farm’s interpretive programming.
Island Farm seeks a full-time Livestock Manager. This is a key position focused on the consistent care of the farm’s livestock as well as integration of the Farm’s animals into daily historic interpretation at the site through a variety of methods.
Primary Responsibilities
- Feeding and care for on-site livestock
- Ability to work draft animals (horses, mules, or oxen) in a variety of circumstances
- Manage a Livestock Assistant and a team of volunteers to ensure consistent and competent care of livestock
- Anticipate, prevent and manage animal issues that arise
- Work with Farm staff to develop engaging ways of incorporating livestock into agriculture production, programming, and workshops
- Interpret the history of Island Farm when needed
- Working with other farm staff, conduct annual plantings and fertilization of pastures when needed
Requirements
- Housing is provided by Island Farm
- Livestock and draft animal experience (including daily care) is preferred
- Must be a team player and flexible to assist in other areas of the Farm when the need arises
- Ability to solve practical problems and to work both independently and on a team to carry out assigned duties with minimal supervision
- Strong work ethic is a must
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of audiences
- Strength to stand, sit, walk, bend, stoop, or twist for long periods of time
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
The salary range for this position is $32,000 – $38,000 per year. This is a full-time, exempt position. Housing in the farm-adjacent two bedroom cottage is included as part of the compensation package.
