Fiber Day

May 16 @ 9:00 am - 3:00 pm

$11

Celebrate spring with all things fiber at Island Farm! On Saturday, May 16, Island Farm will host Fiber Day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., offering visitors a chance to step into the world of 19th-century textile production through interactive, hands-on experiences.

Fiber Day invites guests of all ages to roll up their sleeves and take part in traditional fiber arts. Visitors can try their hand at washing raw wool, carding and spinning the wool into yarn. Visitors can learn about yarn dyeing using natural dyes sourced from plants grown on the Farm. We will also offer crafting a wool bracelet and experiment with simple weaving. In addition to wool work, Island Farm will offer demonstrations of flax processing – an essential step in creating linen. Fiber Day is an essential experience in learning about the effort and talent required to produce fabrics commonly used in the 1800s.

A living history farmstead, Island Farm offers a tangible glimpse into coastal life on Roanoke Island in the mid-1800s. Admission is $11, and children ages 3 and under are admitted free. The site is located at 1140 N US Highway 64, just north of Manteo on Roanoke Island.
