Jo Anne Mathus

Jo Anne began her story at Island Farm in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. She started in the Visitor Center, providing meaningful engagement at a time when social distancing measures made site access and connection challenging.

Meet Island Farm Livestock Caretaker Volunteer Jo Anne Mathus

After two years of welcoming guests to the Farm, she met Beth Burns — a fellow volunteer and shepherdess who cared for her flock on site. Jo Anne soon expanded her volunteering by working with Beth and Farm staff to help steward the heritage sheep flock. Through this work, her love for the animals deepened. Today, Jo Anne remains a dedicated caretaker of Island Farm’s sheep, helping preserve living history one fuzzy ambassador at a time.

Her dedication also extends to Island Farm’s annual Pumpkin Patch each October. Affectionately dubbed the “Pumpkin Queen,” Jo Anne brings energy and a warmth that helps make the event a success year after year.

“Jo Anne has been an integral part of Island Farm – her bubbly personality always leaves visitors smiling, and she never hesitates to lend a helping hand.” – Island Farm Staff Member

Jo Anne gives her heart, hands, and time to inspire others and make Island Farm a place where history lives.
